Reaching week 20 often brings real relief: the first trimester (with more nausea and tiredness, for those who had them) is behind you, and many people feel more energetic in the second trimester.
The anatomy scan
It's during this period (usually between 20 and 24 weeks) that the second-trimester anatomy scan is usually done — a more detailed ultrasound that assesses the formation of the baby's organs, limbs and structures. It's also one of the moments when many families find out the baby's sex, if they choose to know.
Feeling the baby move
The first movements ('the baby kicking') are usually felt between 18 and 22 weeks in a first pregnancy, and a little earlier in later pregnancies, when the person already recognizes the sensation. At first, it feels more like 'butterflies in the stomach' than a real kick.
Your body keeps changing
Around this week, the top of the uterus is usually at the level of the belly button — a reference prenatal care uses to track growth. Weight gain and body changes become more visible, and it's common to feel hungrier and more energetic than at the start.
