What may change in your body
Pelvic heaviness, lower back pain, heartburn and practice contractions may become more frequent. Tiredness may compete with anxiety and the urge to 'get everything ready'.
Care for this week
Prioritize the essentials and let go of the idea that everything has to be perfect before the birth.
Review the signs of labor and of leaking fluid.
Keep emergency contacts within easy reach.
Prenatal care focus
- In low-risk pregnancies, prenatal care is approaching the phase of weekly appointments.
If you're expecting twins
For twins, many teams will already have a more defined plan for monitoring and a likely window for birth, depending on the type of pregnancy.
For those by your side
Protect the pregnant woman from heavy tasks and also from social pressure to receive visitors or 'handle everything'.
Questions for this week
Does the bump dropping mean labor has started?
Not necessarily. Changes in position can happen days or weeks before labor.
Do practice contractions get stronger?
They can become more noticeable, but a regular increase in frequency/intensity needs to be assessed according to your care team's advice.
When to seek care
- Once movements have become familiar, a significant decrease in the pattern you notice should be evaluated without waiting until the next day.
- After 20 weeks, a severe/persistent headache, vision changes, severe pain in the upper abdomen or sudden swelling deserve evaluation for a possible hypertensive condition.
- Before term, regular contractions, increasing pelvic pressure or signs of labor need prompt advice.
