Choosing a portable crib is often seen as a simple step in putting together the baby essentials.

until the practical research begins.

One model offers two adjustable heights; another converts into a playpen; a third is designed to attach to the caregivers' bed. The options vary widely in features and price, raising a recurring clinical question among families and caregivers:

“Does this portable crib truly provide safe sleep conditions for my baby?”

The answer is yes, as long as the product is properly certified and used strictly according to health recommendations and the manufacturer's instructions. Choosing responsibly requires looking beyond design and the number of accessories.

In this guide, we analyze the practical features of seven models sold in Brazil, comparing their specifications with the safe sleep guidelines of the SBP (Brazilian Society of Pediatrics), the mandatory standards of Inmetro (Brazil's national metrology and product certification institute) and the guidance in the Caderneta da Criança (the child health booklet) from Brazil's Ministry of Health.

And here's a fundamental pediatric rule up front: the softest mattress pad is not always the safest.

1. Safe Sleep Criteria in the First Year of Life

During an infant's first year of life, preventing accidents and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) must take priority over any intuitive impression of softness.

Brazil's Ministry of Health and the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics recommend that babies be put to sleep:

Always on their back (supine position) for every nap and for nighttime sleep;

On a firm, flat, non-inclined surface;

In a sleep space free of soft objects: pillows, cushions, positioning rolls, comfort blankets, stuffed animals, loose blankets and crib bumpers should not remain in the sleeping area.

Why is the base of a portable crib rigid?

This is one of the most frequent questions when evaluating a purchase. To an adult, the original padded base seems excessively hard. However, young infants do not yet have enough neck or motor strength to clear their airways if their face ends up pressed against a soft surface, which creates an imminent risk of mechanical asphyxia by suffocation.

Inmetro establishes that, when a folding crib has an integrated padded base and the manual prohibits an additional mattress, this requirement must be strictly followed. Adding separate mattresses can create gaps at the sides with a risk of head entrapment and asphyxia, as well as raising the child's center of gravity, making falls more likely.

2. Differences between a Portable Crib, a Playpen and a Bedside Crib (Co-bed)

Commercially, these terms are often mixed up, but they correspond to distinct categories:

Folding (portable) crib: A collapsible structure intended specifically for the child's rest and sleep, with complete protection around the perimeter. It is subject to mandatory Inmetro certification (Ordinance No. 143/2021).

Playpen: An enclosed space for play and recreation in a protected environment, without continuous sleep as its primary purpose.

Bedside crib (co-bed / bedside sleeper): Designed to be attached alongside the caregivers' bed. It requires maximum attention: the anchoring and locking systems must eliminate any space or gap between the adult bed and the crib, preventing falls and asphyxia from entrapment.

3. Technical Assessment of the Seven Models Analyzed

1. Safety 1st Mini Play

Main use: Compact spaces and families who travel and move around regularly.

Specifications: Two height settings, breathable mesh sides, mosquito net, two wheels with brakes, side pocket and carrying bag. Approximate dimensions of 98 × 60 × 74 cm; weight of 7.9 kg. Inmetro registration No. 002385/2019 (recommended up to 15 kg).

Safety aspect: The padded base is attached with a perimeter zipper, which prevents gaps from forming at the edges and stops the mattress pad from shifting unintentionally as the child moves.

Point of attention: Firm base designed for sleep safety. Do not use an additional mattress on top without explicit authorization in the technical manual.

2. Burigotto Sonata

Main use: A straightforward option, focused on value for money and a simplified structure.

Specifications: Safety locks on all four sides and on the central base, height adjustment and a functional design from a well-established manufacturer in the Brazilian market.

Safety aspect: A lean structure, without excess hanging plastic parts or additional fabrics, which makes correct assembly and the cleaning routine simpler.

Point of attention: The raised intermediate level supports a lower weight limit and must be removed as soon as the child shows active motor mobility (rolling over or pushing up on their limbs).

3. Maxi Baby Lazy

Main use: Families who want to combine a backup sleep space with a play area.

Specifications: Large usable interior area, stated capacity of up to 15 kg and a side opening with a zipper at floor level.

Safety aspect: The low opening supports an older child's independence in recreational (playpen) mode, allowing safe entry and exit under supervision.

Point of attention: The larger dimensions require checking the free space in the room beforehand. Check the manual for the specific assembly instructions for each function.

4. Cosco Kids Happy

Main use: Use as a complete care station in the first months of life.

Specifications: Two height options, mosquito net, canopy, integrated changing table, side organizer, wheels with locking system and carrying bag. Inmetro registration No. 10899/2023 (capacity up to 15 kg; product weight: 9.05 kg).

Safety aspect: The attached changing table makes nighttime care quicker, but requires continuous supervision: never step away or take your hands off the child during a diaper change.

Point of attention: Because it has multiple accessories, it is quite bulky when folded, making it less practical for frequent weekly transport.

5. Cosco Kids Nanny

Main use: Caregivers looking for a higher load capacity as stated by the manufacturer.

Specifications: Stated structural support of up to 18 kg, two base heights, mosquito net with closure, breathable mesh sides and an approximate weight of 10 kg. Inmetro registration No. 000091/2019.

Safety aspect: Wide textile mesh walls ensure adequate air circulation and make continuous visual monitoring by caregivers easier.

Point of attention: The 18 kg limit attests to the strength of the materials, but the deciding factor for repositioning or no longer using the intermediate base is the child's motor ability (standing up or trying to climb over the edges).

6. Maxi Baby Lune

Main use: A secondary crib to keep at grandparents' homes or with occasional caregivers.

Specifications: Folding mechanism, two height positions, casters and a side entrance, in an affordable price range.

Safety aspect: Suitable for occasional overnight stays and family support without the need for multiple accessories with complex assembly.

Point of attention: Make sure all perimeter locks make an audible click before each time you place the infant inside.

7. Cosco Kids Co-bed Pluggy

Main use: The first postpartum months and support for nighttime breastfeeding alongside the caregivers' bed.

Specifications: Fold-down side panel, straps for anchoring to the adult bed, seven height settings, retractable telescopic legs and a washable cover.

Safety aspect: Allows the recommended practice of room-sharing without the risks of accidental suffocation inherent in bed-sharing with newborns.

Point of attention: The anchoring straps must be kept taut, with no unevenness or gap between the adults' mattress and the crib. Use must stop as soon as the infant begins to roll over or sit up.

4. Purchase Recommendations and Safe Handling

Before making your final decision, prioritize the following criteria:

Locking mechanism: Check that the perimeter locks and the bottom lock have a locking device to prevent spontaneous folding.

Gap tolerance: According to Inmetro parameters, gaps between the base and the side walls must not exceed 3 cm. In cribs with an original padded base, do not improvise extra mattresses that could compromise this tolerance.

Motor development milestones vs. base position:

Intermediate (high) level: Exclusively for newborns and infants who do not roll over, do not crawl and do not push up on their arms.

Mandatory lowering: As soon as the child shows the first attempts to roll over or to support themselves on all fours, the base must immediately be placed at the lowest level to prevent falls.

Surrounding environment: Place the crib away from windows, curtain cords, blinds, electrical outlets or mobiles with strings that could pose a risk of mechanical strangulation.
