What may change in your body
There may be no symptoms at all. Some people report mild cramps, breast tenderness, tiredness or light bleeding; these signs aren't specific. Bleeding in pregnancy has many causes and should be reported to your healthcare team, especially if it's heavy, persistent or comes with pain.
Care for this week
If the test is positive, try to start prenatal care early.
Keep taking folic acid when recommended.
Avoid alcohol and don't adjust medications without guidance.
Prenatal care focus
- Confirmation can be done with a urine or blood test at the right time. A very early ultrasound may not yet show all the expected structures.
If you're expecting twins
An ultrasound done too early may not reliably determine the number of embryos, placentas and amniotic sacs.
For those by your side
Help organize the first appointment and avoid pressuring the pregnant person to share the news before they feel ready.
Questions for this week
Does light bleeding mean pregnancy loss?
Not necessarily, but any bleeding during pregnancy deserves professional advice.
Does the ultrasound already show the baby?
It may be early. What shows up depends on the actual gestational age, the type of scan and how the pregnancy is progressing.
When to seek care
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to your care team; how heavy it is, pain and gestational age change how urgent it is.
- Severe, worsening or persistent abdominal pain deserves evaluation.
- Fever, fainting, significant shortness of breath, chest pain or feeling very unwell need medical care.
In an emergency, go to the urgent care service in your area. This content does not replace a professional assessment.
