What may change in your body
Rising hormones can bring tiredness, sleepiness, sore breasts, a frequent need to urinate and nausea. It's also perfectly possible to be pregnant and feel little or nothing at this stage.
Care for this week
Have your first prenatal appointment as soon as possible.
If nausea starts, small meals and frequent sips of fluid may help; seek advice if you can't keep fluids down.
Review medications, supplements and workplace exposures with your team.
Prenatal care focus
- Brazil's Ministry of Health recommends starting prenatal care as soon as pregnancy is discovered or suspected, preferably by the 12th week.
If you're expecting twins
In multiple pregnancies, confirming the number of fetuses and then the chorionicity will be important to plan follow-up care.
For those by your side
You can help by taking on tasks on the most tiring days and by not downplaying symptoms that, although common, can be really uncomfortable.
Questions for this week
I'm not feeling nauseous. Is that bad?
No. Symptoms vary a lot between pregnancies, and their absence alone doesn't indicate a problem.
Is it too early for an ultrasound?
It may be. Your team decides the timing based on dating, symptoms, history and the purpose of the scan.
When to seek care
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to your care team; how heavy it is, pain and gestational age change how urgent it is.
- Severe, worsening or persistent abdominal pain deserves evaluation.
- Fever, fainting, significant shortness of breath, chest pain or feeling very unwell need medical care.
In an emergency, go to the urgent care service in your area. This content does not replace a professional assessment.
The next chapter
In week 6, facial structures start to appear and the developing heart may already be seen on some ultrasounds.
