What may change in your body
For some people, nausea starts to show signs of easing; for others, it doesn't. Fatigue, constipation and appetite changes may continue. The bump may be starting to show, especially after previous pregnancies or in multiple pregnancies.
Care for this week
If your appetite is coming back, focus on variety and food safety rather than 'eating for two'.
Stay hydrated and keep up activity that suits your condition.
Bring questions about first-trimester screening to your appointment.
Prenatal care focus
- Between 11 and 14 weeks there is usually an important window for the first-trimester ultrasound assessment, depending on indication and availability.
If you're expecting twins
Between 11 and 14 weeks is a particularly useful time to confirm chorionicity and amnionicity in twins.
For those by your side
Going along to the ultrasound, if the pregnant woman wants you there, can be a concrete way to take part.
Questions for this week
Can I feel movement yet?
Usually not. The movements are there, but they're usually felt later on.
Is it bad if symptoms are easing?
Not necessarily. The intensity of symptoms can change naturally; worrying signs should be evaluated in their clinical context.
When to seek care
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to your care team; how heavy it is, pain and gestational age change how urgent it is.
- Severe, worsening or persistent abdominal pain deserves evaluation.
- Fever, fainting, significant shortness of breath, chest pain or feeling very unwell need medical care.
In an emergency, go to the urgent care service in your area. This content does not replace a professional assessment.
The next chapter
In week 12, reflexes and movements become more organized and the first trimester nears its end.
