What may change in your body
The uterus is growing, but your belly may not give the pregnancy away yet. Constipation, gas, nausea, mild heartburn and a frequent need to urinate may appear. Clear or whitish discharge may increase; a strong odor, itching or pain needs to be evaluated.
Care for this week
Include fiber and fluids as tolerated to help your bowels.
Take breaks and adjust your routine if tiredness is weighing on you.
Write down questions for your appointment; early on it's easy to forget half of them when the moment comes.
Prenatal care focus
- Initial tests may include a complete blood count, blood typing, blood glucose, urine test/urine culture and screening for infections according to protocol and history.
If you're expecting twins
If it's a twin pregnancy, knowing whether the babies share a placenta and/or amniotic sac will be central to the follow-up plan.
For those by your side
You can take on tasks that involve strong smells, like cooking or cleaning, if they trigger nausea.
Questions for this week
Is it OK if I don't have a bump yet?
Yes. How the belly looks varies with body shape, muscle tone, previous pregnancies and other factors.
Is discharge normal?
It can increase in pregnancy, but a change in color, strong odor, itching, burning or pain deserves evaluation.
When to seek care
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to your care team; how heavy it is, pain and gestational age change how urgent it is.
- Severe, worsening or persistent abdominal pain deserves evaluation.
- Fever, fainting, significant shortness of breath, chest pain or feeling very unwell need medical care.
