What may change in your body
Nausea and fatigue may still be strong. Headaches, skin changes, constipation and a bloated feeling may also appear. Blood volume starts to increase over the course of pregnancy, contributing to several of these changes.
Care for this week
Don't go long periods without eating if that makes nausea worse.
Talk about caffeine, supplements and diet in a realistic way that takes your routine into account.
Seek help if anxiety or fear is getting in the way of sleep, eating or daily activities.
Prenatal care focus
- Pregnancy dating can be refined by ultrasound when indicated.
If you're expecting twins
In twin pregnancies, an early ultrasound helps establish chorionicity, important information for risk and for how often follow-up is needed.
For those by your side
Instead of asking 'what do you need?', offer concrete options: food, transportation, company at an appointment or time to rest.
Questions for this week
Can we find out the sex yet?
The genitals are developing, but identifying the sex by ultrasound is usually more reliable later on.
My nausea has gotten worse. How long will it last?
Many people feel better by the end of the first trimester, but how long it lasts varies. Persistent vomiting that makes it hard to stay hydrated needs to be evaluated.
When to seek care
- Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to your care team; how heavy it is, pain and gestational age change how urgent it is.
- Severe, worsening or persistent abdominal pain deserves evaluation.
- Fever, fainting, significant shortness of breath, chest pain or feeling very unwell need medical care.
In an emergency, go to the urgent care service in your area. This content does not replace a professional assessment.
